Playing Vinyl Records Is My Favorite Way to Unplug

When Corrine Bailey Rae first sang “Girl put your records on, tell me your favorite song” on her 2006 self-titled album, I felt seen, even as a high school junior. I’ve always had a deep affinity for music of all types—classical, hip-hop, rock—since listening to it is one of my favorite ways to decompress. Although I never leave home without my headphones so I can listen to my expertly curated playlists, Bailey Rae was definitely on to something when she urged the masses to physically put on their records.

I pride myself on consuming music in as many forms as possible, but there’s something totally different about listening to my jams on an actual record player. Not only is my turntable an aesthetically pleasing addition to my apartment, but it also offers a deliciously rich sound to the music. Listening to and collecting vinyl records is a special hobby of mine that helps me feel even closer to the beats, lyrics, and perspectives of many of my favorite artists.

While I could go on about the convenience of streaming music straight from my phone (I grew up during the peak Walkman/cassette era), it’s too easy for me to get swept up in checking email, the news cycle, or falling through a social media blackhole, which is the complete opposite of relaxation. The best part about playing albums on vinyl in my apartment is that I don’t have to think about anything other than the music, which allows me to truly unplug from the chaos of the world. As soon as I place a record on my Crosley player, lower the needle, and crank the volume, all the stresses of the day melt away. I choose to stay focused on the rhythms of my favorite records instead of trying to sweat the small stuff. I’m more than happy to dance all by myself in the comfort of my entryway, living room, and/or kitchen, depending on my mood.
