I like to think of my life (or more specifically, my hair) in terms of B.T.— "before turban"—and, more recently, A.T.— "after turban." Let me explain. For most of my life, I've dried my natural 4A curls by wringing it out with a towel to soak up any excess moisture, often resulting in a head full of fuzzy, lifeless curls. But a few months ago, all of that changed when I came across a chic microfiber hair towel that helped me drastically cut down my drying time, without having to resort to using heat on my already heat-blasted hair.
Made with an absorbent, microfiber material that’s designed to decrease friction (and therefore frizz), the turban helps keep my curl pattern intact and add some bounce to them. It also doesn’t feel like a balancing act when I’m wearing it— as it might with a weighty body towel— since it’s extremely lightweight. It feels no heavier than a beanie, but still looks extremely posh. With it on, I like to imagine I’m one of those posh women with towels on their heads, sunning on the rooftop of some swanky hotel.
Most importantly, the turban has scaled back my drying time to mere minutes (where it used to take up to an hour for my thick, natural hair to fully dry). It virtually only takes five to seven minutes for my hair to go from soaking wet to manageably damp, which makes it way easier to manipulate my hair with my favorite products after-the-fact. Designed like half of a ying and yang symbol, with a “bowl” section in the back where your head goes, and a slimmer piece in the front that twists into a loop, everything locks in place with the use of a small button at the base that prevents the microfiber towel from springing loose accidentally. Once I’m out of the shower, I pop my dripping wet hair into the turban, twist it once or twice, secure it at the back and finish getting ready.
Using it almost feels like pressing fast forward on my hair maintenance routine, and this cozy hair wrap has become so invaluable to me that I now own three of them (one just in case the other gets lost, a second for drying my hair in a flash, and another to wear when I just want to look cute). I honestly can’t imagine how I ever lived without them.
