If You’re Waiting for Someone to Tell You What To Do to Flatten the Curve, Here It Is

How to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, by Tanya Basu and Karen Hao in MIT Technology Review, published March 13

A ton of just extremely practical tips, from how to safely handle packages to how to shop for groceries.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Distancing, by Kaitlyn Tiffany in The Atlantic, published March 12

Tiffany asked three different experts the same set of questions, and then shared their responses in full. The really interesting thing is how even the experts don’t totally agree with each other on some of the details (although their overall advice is still the same: Social distancing is essential.)

If you need to hear from experts that social distancing is NOT an overreaction:

Coronavirus is past containment, but America can limit epidemic: Q&A with former FDA Chief, in USA Today, published March 9

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, M.D., the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2017 to 2019, told USA Today on Monday, March 9, that we’re “past containment” of the virus and need to think about “aggressive steps at mitigation,” such as shutting down businesses where large groups of people congregate (like movie theaters), or requiring businesses to have nonessential employees telework.

He followed up those thoughts on March 12, with a Tweet thread in which he says, among many other things: “Small gatherings, parties, all should be postponed for the next month or two.”

“It’s now or never for the U.S. if it hopes to keep coronavirus from burning out of control, by Tom Bossert, former homeland security advisor from 2017 to 2018, in the Washington Post, published March 9

In this op-ed, Bossert advocates for “school closures, isolation of the sick, home quarantines of those who have come into contact with the sick, social distancing, telework and large-gathering cancellations.”

If you can work from home, you should. Now., by William Hanage, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

In this op-ed, this epidemiologist from Harvard explains why it’s so important to work from home if you can.

Cancel Everything, by Yascha Mounk in The Atlantic, published March 10

A very clear explainer about why we need to practice social distancing right away.

If you’re wondering, “What’s the worst that can happen?”

Young and Unafraid of the Coronavirus Epidemic? Good For You. Now Stop Killing People., in Newsweek published on March 11

In this opinion essay, an anonymous doctor from northern Italy explains that doctors are “having to choose between intubating a 40-year-old with two kids, a 40-year old who is fit and healthy with no co-morbidities, and a 60-year-old with high blood pressure, because they don’t have enough beds.” That’s because too many people are sick at once, and the health system doesn’t have the capacity to handle them all.

The Extraordinary Decisions Facing Italian Doctors, by Yascha Mounk in the Atlantic, published March 11

Mounk wrote more about this tragedy unfolding in Italy for The Atlantic; the point both of these articles is making is that if we don’t take this seriously, we’re at risk of facing the same issue.
