The $5 Gentle Face Wipes I Use to Take Off Pretty Much Everything

It feels weird to have a favorite brand of face wipes, but let me explain: One of the most difficult things about managing rosacea, acne, or any chronic skin condition is that it often requires constant dedication. It’s not always enough to take care of it once or twice a day—sometimes you need to give it attention during the day, when you’d rather be thinking about basically anything else.

For me, I find that I can generally keep my rosacea triggers under control the vast majority of the time by avoiding irritating makeup and skin-care products, as well as alcohol. But one trigger I hadn’t anticipated dealing with so frequently was sweating, specifically the copious amount of sweat that pours out of me during my favorite indoor cycling class.

The heat, exercise, and inevitable sweat all combine to make working out one of my most potent triggers for rosacea and acne. So I’ve learned that I need to be diligent about wiping my face before class to remove makeup, and after class to remove sweat and help cool my skin a little. That’s where the humble face wipe comes in.

But I can’t use just any ol’ face wipe. Many of them contain fragrances or other ingredients that cause my face to sting—especially if it’s already red and hot after cycling. Others have exfoliating bumps on them which, while great in theory, are just too harsh and unnecessary for me.

So let me introduce (or reintroduce) you to the gentlest face wipes I’ve found so far: Simple Kind to Skin micellar cleansing wipes, $5. One wipe takes off all my makeup—eyes, brows, face, and lips—with room to spare. And after working out, I love how cooling and soothing they feel on my face. They’re unscented and work just as well as the brand’s actual micellar water, which I also use at home. Plus, they’re impressively cost-effective: They hover around five bucks at both Target and Amazon, and are a little more at Ulta.

Yes, they are “just” face wipes and won’t treat rosacea or acne on their own. But they’re also the face wipes that help me deal with my (sometimes quite frustrating) skin in a small yet significant way.
