Face oils and I have a relationship status that would be described as “complicated” on Facebook, if that were still a thing people did. I truly do want to use them—and who wouldn’t? They smell great, seem incredibly fancy, and usually come with tales of fantastic moisturizing powers.
But it never quite works out that way on my skin. First off, I have sensitive skin (due, in part, to rosacea), which means that botanical oils usually contain way too many herbal things that I might have a reaction to. Second, my skin tends toward oily, especially in the T-zone. So any oils that are heavy or occlusive more than emollient are a no-no and usually just leave me with breakouts.
So, I was a little nervous to try out First Aid Beauty’s new face oil, the Ultra Repair Cannabis & Oat Dry Oil, $30. But from the very beginning I could tell that this one was going to go a little differently. The packaging described it with words like “soothing,” which are never a guarantee, but did suggest that this oil would treat my sensitive skin quite nicely. It also contains ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and arnica that often calm skin as well as hemp (cannabis) oil.
Finally, because it’s light “dry oil” it absorbs—and I can’t emphasize this enough—quickly. Nearly immediately, in fact, leaving behind just a slight glow. To be clear, it doesn’t feel dry when you put it on; it feels like a normal (albeit lighter and thinner) oily oil that just seeps magically into the skin. After putting it on in the morning, I can watch my redness fade (temporarily) and enjoy a subtle glow for the rest of the morning. Or if I put it on at night, I know I’ll wake up with a noticeably smoother, more hydrated face.
Although it hasn’t magically made my redness disappear, it does usually diminish it at least temporarily and makes me feel like, finally, my sensitive skin and I can be part of the Cool Face Oil Squad.
