Not to brag or anything, but I have a pretty robust sneaker collection. And when I say robust, I mean I literally have a pair for every day of the week, and then some (just in case the week gets longer). A few of these I wear exclusively to work out in, and others grace my feet when I’m looking to take the impact of a fancy dress down a notch, or spice up a structured suit. It’s fair to say that I wear sneakers with at least 70 percent of my outfits—in fact, I’m surprised I wasn’t wearing a pair of baby-sized sneakers the day I was born—which is why I was over the moon about testing out the Tread by Everlane. Released this past April, the Tread by Everlane, $98, is the retailer’s first entry into the sneaker world, and have been getting plenty of buzz around the internet. As a self-proclaimed sneakerhead, I had to get my hands on a pair—actually two, in colors “Butter” (a muted yellow) and “Off-White”—to try for myself. Here’s what I thought.
Although they’re not specifically designed for workouts, they definitely have great traction.
I’m not going to suggest that I’d take a full on HIIT or dance class in these babies, but I can say that I’ve successfully worn them while: 1) Running to catch a train at the last minute, 2) Quickly maneuvering down a tricky flight of NYC subway stairs, and 3) Speed walking in the pouring rain without falling flat on my face, which says a lot about their construction.
They’re also extremely comfortable!
Even without wearing them in first, the sneakers felt like they were made just for my foot. Since the Tread is only available in full sizes, I was a bit nervous about how my 9.5 size foot would fit in a 10, but I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better fit. Although my sneakers were a half size bigger than I normally wear, they felt like they were true to size. Wearing these sneakers is almost like wearing my favorite house slippers all day long (but I can actually walk outside in these).
I can wear them with everything in my closet (and I probably have).
I’m a big fan of muted colors in general, so the Tread’s color options were music to my ears (or eyes?). Since all of the sneakers are available in seven colors, including earth tones like dusty yellow and blush, or neutrals like off-white and black, it was easy to wear them every single day with just about anything: Dresses, jumpsuits, jeans, bike shorts, you name it, I probably did it. The minimal sneakers ride a fine line between modern and retro, which makes them easy to dress up or down.
They’re made of recycled materials, so wearing them makes me feel like I’m doing right by the environment in some small way.
The sneaker’s sole, for example, is made of recycled rubber, and its laces and insoles from recycled plastic, but just to take it one step further, Everlane is even tracking the Tread’s carbon footprint, starting with the actual cattle farms it sources the shoe’s leather upper from. Cute and eco-friendly? I’m sold.
The Tread by Everlane are quickly becoming the sneakers I gravitate towards when planning an outfit, which, when you have a collection like mine, is honestly a big deal. Its versatility and comfort is everything I look for in a sneaker—and really a shoe, period—which makes me truly excited to wear it over and over again. Don’t be surprised to see it show up on my Instagram a million times over.
